This new book, Andrew Root writes in its preface, grows out of feedback from his widely read Ministry in a Secular Age books, but whereas that multiyear project assumes a pastoral readership, this one aims at normal churchgoers — people with “pretty much any job but pastor or professor.” What Root and co-author Blair D. Bertrand propose is fairly straightforward, if audacious: The church in the U.S. is in decline, but the problems aren’t what you think, and most proposed solutions just make things worse. Their solutions are less tactical and more philosophical, less about action and more about postures.
